My Favourite Films

For this post I decided it would be fun to introduce my top 10 films.
These are not neccessarily films I consider to undoubtedly be the best 10 films ever, they are just my personal favourites, although they are all excellent films worth seeing if you haven't.
Trying to cut my list of movies down to just 10 was very hard, so this is actually top 12 list.
I will list them in chronological order as orderering them from 1st -12th would be even harder.
For each film I will state the year released, directed, and the main cast, and a couple of sentences about the film and why I like it.

Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope – 1977, George Lucas;  Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher.
image from: http://www.geekadelphia.com/2010/08/11/see-how-fans-remade-episode-iv-in-star-wars-uncut-2/
I shouldn't need to say much about this one. It was the first Star Wars to be released and is brilliant in every way possible. If you haven't seen it you've either been living under a rock or haven't had access to a television. Either way I feel sorry for you.

Apocalypse Now – 1979, Francis Ford Coppola;  Martin Sheen, Robert Duvall, Marlin Brando

image from http://sites.duke.edu/apocalypse/?page_id=92

This one is set during the Vietnam war and we follow a young Martin Sheen on his mission to deal with missing and presumed crazy Colonel Kurtz (Brando). The tone gets stranger and stranger as we follow Sheen deeper and deeper into the jungle. Pretty tough one to explain in a few sentences but with one liners like 'I love the smell of napalm in the morning', it's worth watching and rewatching.

The Terminator, 1984, James Cameron; Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton, Paul Winfield.

iamge from: http://oneguyrambling.com/?p=3810

Another timeless sci-fi classic, and one that helped the careers of now hollywood big names James Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Hard to leave off any top 10 list.

Full Metal Jacket, 1987, Stanley Kubrick; Matthew Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D'Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey, Dorian Harewood, Arliss Howard, Kevyn Major Howard, Ed O'Ross.

image from:  http://www.hdwpapers.com/full_metal_jacket_wallpaper_hd_2-wallpapers.html

Another Vietnam war film. I could've picked one of many Kubrick films, but ultimately this is my favourite. Fun fact: the guy who plays the drill sergeant was one in real life.

The Silence of the Lambs, 1991, Jonathon Demme; Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Ted Levine, Scott Glenn.

image from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Silence_of_the_Lambs_%28film%29

A excellent thriller that's a mix of horror and crime genres. Brilliantly led by Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, despite the fact Hopkins has only 16 minutes screen time.

Dead Man – 1995 - Jim Jarmusch;  Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer, Billy Bob Thornton, Iggy Pop, Crispin Glover.

image from:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Man
One of the lesser-known films on this list, described as 'psychaedelic western' by director Jarmusch and I think this is apt. Stars Johnny Depp and Gary Farmer, and also features interesting cameos from Iggy Pop, Crispin Glover, Billy Bob Thornton, and Robert Mitchum in his final film role. The other big star, in my opinion, is Neil Young who provides a beautiful soundtrack. Oh and it's in black and white. If you can handle something different this is a masterpiece.

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, 1998, Guy Ritchie; Jason Flemyng, Dexter Fletcher, Nick Moran, Jason Statham, Steven Mackintosh, Vinnie Jones, Sting.

image from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lock,_Stock_and_Two_Smoking_Barrels_2.jpg
It's a British gangster crime film and it's also a comedy; has an epic storyline with plot twists beyond clever. Helped launch the hollywood careers of ex pro footballer Vinnie Jones, and Jason Statham.

Saving Private Ryan, 1998, Steven spielberg; Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Tom Sizemore, Matt Damon
image from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saving_Private_Ryan

This World War 2 epic is set during the invasion of Normandy by the allies. After a brutal opening scene showing events of Omaha Beach we see Captain Miller (Hanks) lead a small unit on mission to (yes you guessed it!) save Private Ryan (Damon) whose 3 brothers have already been killed in action.

Fight club 1999 – David Fincher;  Brad Pitt, Edward Norton, Helena Bonham Carter

 image from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fight_Club

I'm not even sure what genre of film this is. Maybe thriller. Fight Club is based on a novel of the same name and I guess the main story is about the coming of age of the main protagonist, whilst it makes comments on consumerism and other parts of society.

The Matrix, 1999, The Wachowski Brothers; Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishbourne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving.

It's a sci-fi, action film, made by Australians, it's got Keanu and it heavily references philosophy. What else could you want in a film?

American psycho, 2000, Mary Harron;  Christian Bale, Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Justin Theroux, Reese Witherspoon.

image from:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Americanpsychoposter.jpg

Kids these days would know him as Batman, but in my opinion, Christian Bale did his best work in this horror/thriller as the ultimate yuppie with good taste in music but a lot of problems.

28 Days Later, 2002 – Danny Boyle; Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson, Christopher Eccleston.

Image from: http://veryaware.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/28-DAYS-LATER.jpg

This is a British post apocalyptic / zombie which follows the struggle of four survivors after the breakdown of society. Another movie made stronger by an excellent soundtrack, put together by John Murphy. The sequel isn't nearly as strong but is saved by the wonderful Jeremy Renner. If you're after an excellent zombie movie and you've seen all Romero's then this is highly reccomended.

The Italian Job

The Italian Job

The story is about a group of thieves trying to get their revenge. Nearing the end of their job, Steve, a member in the group, decides to betray his friends and take the $35m worth of gold they've acquired in the last job. Steve ended up having to kill the mentor in the group, and fire random shots thinking that he had killed the others too. It's very difficult for Charlie to lose his loved mentor. The Italian job isn't one that they're going to forget easily.

After some time, the team regrouped, now with the extra hand of the mentor's daughter. They want to take revenge and take back all the earnings that Steve stole from them. Steve is a great tactician, and in order to beat him, Charlie and the group will have to do some radical last-minute changes to their plan.

The movie is good, remembering the fact that it's a 2003 movie. Some scenes in the movie are very tense, making it a very exciting one to watch. Additionally, we rarely see Mark Wahlberg in an action movie, and this one turns out to be awesome. Jason Statham is also featured in this movie!

Castaway (2000)

Thought I would do a brief review and discussion of one of my favourite films, Castaway, for the next post.
(SPOILER ALERT - this film is 13 years old, if you haven't seen it yet you should before you read this. I may give away important plot elements or endings for this film).

I guess I would label Castaway as an 'adventure' or 'survival' film. Maybe even drama but I don't think categories are that important.

So, it was released in 2000 and stars Tom Hanks. Helen Hunt has a minor role but the other major player is Wilson, who is actually an inanimate object but plays a crucial role. I'll get to him later.

                                                'WIILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLSOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!'
               (image from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cast_Away)

As you can probably guess from the title, Tom Hanks get stranded on an island. It may be cliched but I think it is a very dense and interesting theme for a film and allows the director a lot of room for exploration in whichever area he or she wants.

Hanks is a fedex worker in the film. Apparently the company did not pay for the product placement but the exposure was priceless for them. As Hanks is traveling around the world for his job as a systems analyst the plane crashes in the ocean and he is eventually washed up on a small island somewhere in the pacific, as the only survivor.

Early in the film we see Chuck (Hanks) struggle with realising he is alone and cannot escape the island easily.

                                       (image from: http://www.casadecoimbra.com/castaway-tom-hanks-wilson)

Several fedex packages from the plane eventually wash up some of which are useful tools in his quest for survival and this includes Wilson. As a volleyball, he seems innocuous at first but quickly becomes the 2nd main 'actor' in the film. As you can imagine, in a film centred around one person it could be hard to construct dialogue and keep things interesting.
However, after cutting his hand and throwing Wilson away in frustration, Chuck leaves a bloody hand print on the volleyball and then draws on face. Hanks spends years on the island and eventually starts talking to Wilson. This allows us to experience Chuck's journey much better as he confides in Chuck and discusses all his thoughts and feelings. Without Wilson this film would probably fail as it is a lot more interesting than watching Hanks talk to himself for a large part of 2 hours.

We watch as Chuck becomes more and more adapted and successful with life on the island and eventually construct a raft and attempt to leave.  He times his departure perfectly with the weather conditions and manages to get away from the strong tide. During his time out on the ocean Chuck loses Wilson when he falls off the raft, and Chuck is overwhelmed with loneliness.
If you wanted to read too much into it, I guess Wilson essentially is Chuck, and this scene not only shows Chuck losing his only source of company and attempt to retain some sense of sanity, but symbolises Chuck losing a part of himself.

We then see Chuck rescued by an ocean liner and his difficulty with returning to civilisation.
His wife has moved on and a funeral had taken place. There is also one fedex package which Chuck never opened. He delivers it to the address but the house is empty so he leaves a note saying 'this package saved my life', and after leaving receives directions from a woman who appears to be the owner of the package. In the final scene we see Chuck standing at the crossroads looking at the different options and at the woman driving off. I didn't like that part of the film as much. I think Wilson saved Chuck's life but anyway...

This is the End (2013)

This is The End

It's the end of the world!!! No, what's happening? Why is everybody getting zapped into that blue stream of light from the sky?

Yes you're right. This is the end is an epic and hilarious comedy movie. It features many well-known celebrities, mixing them into a huge bowl of talents, while bringing the best of each and every actor. The most prominent actors are Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Jonah Hill and Seth Rogen. Other famous figures in the movie include Rihanna, Emma Watson, Channing Tatum and Kevin Hart. The line-up of the cast is amazing, making the film an interesting one to watch.

This is the end seems like a loosely created film, with a lot of humor spaces for the actors to fill. Overall, the film looks very silly and stupid, as it takes a depiction of the biblical Apocalypse. The storyline is nothing bizarre - very easy and light for watchers. The story begins as Jay travels out of town and visits his best buddy Rogen. The two later come to James Franco's new mansion, where a housewarming party is held. The twist begins here. catastrophic events begin to take the wheel and the characters are faced with terror.

One of the highlights in the movie is when Emma Watson goes rampage with an axe. She revealed her acting skills playing a wild girl.

The movie is so silly that you can laugh every minute. Furthermore, the ending takes an unexpected turn which may shock everyone.

If you're looking for a funny and silly movie to watch with your friends, this is definitely a good shot. You can get a good laugh and have fun with your friends.
